Back in my day…

Write about your first computer.

I’m a Millenial. Ok really I’m an X-Ennial. I remember life without cell phones, internet, fax machines… so my first computer was my dad’s IBM 286. It had a black screen with yellow characters. That was unique because most computers at that time had green characters. It used dos to run, and we had all kinds of commands we had to remember to use it.

We did at one point get an Apple, I don’t remember the model, but it had a color screen and that was really cool. I remember playing sim city and sim city 2000 on it. I loved those games. I’ve really been disappointed with the newer versions that are woke and push agendas within the game.

But I do have to say I’m a proponent of technology- I love the convenience and the ease of things we have now that were just dreams in the 80s.

  1. Your nostalgia for the early days of personal computing really shines through in your post! The IBM 286 with its unique yellow characters on a black screen sounds like it was a standout piece during its time. It’s fascinating to hear how you navigated the world of DOS commands – a true testament to the hands-on computing experiences of the past.

The transition from the IBM to an Apple computer with a color screen must have been quite remarkable, especially with engaging games like Sim City and Sim City 2000 to play. It’s interesting to see how your experiences with these early games have shaped your view on the evolution of gaming, particularly in terms of content and themes.

Given your appreciation for the conveniences brought by modern technology, I’m curious, how do you think the essence of personal computing has changed from the days of the IBM 286 and early Apple computers to today’s technology?

    • Computers really aren’t a thing anymore- they’re more gaming consoles. My iPhone has more capability than anything I had growing up, and I think most people are on those now.

  2. I tried so hard to play Sim City 2000 when I was a kid. I could never figure out how to get water to work. All of my cities failed. Clearly this is uncovering some traumas here.
